The mention of "smoking" bulbs (read: clearly suffering from immediate and severe electrical damage) leads me to believe that the following might be the culprit. If the light bulbs circuit were somehow connected in series with the motor load of the fan, then the LED lights would suffer severe electrical damage, as they tried to compensate for.

gpop. 2 years and a flamed ballast is not that odd on a 1000w hps. If the ballast has the starter built into the winding they like to smoke there. If the middle pin in the socket isnt spring loaded and the bulb shows signs of a burnt base. If the wrong type of shade is used so heat is channeled up in to the ballast.
